unnamedThis Dream Keeper News explains what we are offering for our schools that are dealing with a whole new world and to our students who are at home. It has some of the details of what has come out of many hours of group Zoom calls, simulating student experiences with focus groups of both seasoned educators and community members relatively new to our program.

The result is something that will serve us well–now and in years to come. We are creating access for everyone–or as many people as we possibly can–and that has ALWAYS been the goal of Dreamline. Nothing new there. But the urgency of creating all phone-friendly materials that really work is right now, and we’ve got it.

Below is an outline of how our Dreamline Abundance Program works, followed by our schedule of required information calls for participation with a group, and the rollout timeframe.

Very Briefly in other news, our Home Depot Mexico fundraiser continues to break giving records week after week, our Abundance Mask Sales program (link at the bottom) is off and running with our first large order of 200 just in to serve a homeless shelter, and we are working weekly to stay on track of a June 7 ALL DIGITAL Dream Philly Festival.

Below is the real news, and it’s news I want you to share.

If you want to participate with students, you need to sign up for an information and training Zoom call. Max 25 participants per call.

Traditionally, students create cloth Dream Banners in school or other groups. Now they can have the same group experience with a smartphone, three pieces of paper, and something to write with.

The ABUNDANCE program has four segments. Each can be done with live Zoom or asynchronously with students doing activities and reporting back to their teacher.
LIVE ZOOM
Large group presentation to start, then discussIon and activities in breakout rooms. 40-minute lessons.
ASYNCHRONOUS
Watch phone formatted video that simulates live version, allowing students to pause video to follow activity directions and to email work to teacher.  Self-paced.

We begin with a Dreamline program introduction by me, explaining that Dreamline helps us focus on purpose for eduction and our lives–a perspective that helps us in this time of individual isolation AND global connection.

Students are then led through an exploration of a set of six Dream Banners in phone format. For live video sessions, this is in small group  discussion. All students do the YOU/NEW activity using one side of the first sheet of paper.

In the example below from Veracruz, Mexico, students will  also see a translation to English and the play button for a recording of the student speaking their dreams in Spanish.
Different Banner Collections are used for different age groups of students so they are age and language appropriate.

In the “Inside-Selfie” lesson, students do the reflection and rough draft work to create a Dreamline Banner that’s

  1. grounded in personal values
  2. looks to the future, and
  3. is connected to others with hashtags.

Students see examples of values written by second graders in West Philadelphia and 9th graders in Haiti, then write their own. They use the other side of the first sheet of paper.

Next for the Inside Selfie is a look at dreams for the future, preceded by a quick introduction to US Poet Langston Hughes and followed by prompts for imagining a change to make your world a better place in 20 years from now.
For this activity they use one side of their second sheet of paper.

The last part of the “Inside-Selfie” is a connection of our dreams to others’ dreams through hashtags. Students brainstorm hashtags they know that fit their dream and also learn about and use the UN Global Goal (or SDG) hashtags for the Dreamline program. These make the dream topics searchable in our online Gallery of thousands.
For this activity, students use the other side of their second sheet of paper.

“Dream Keeper” is an OFFLINE activity which will take up to 90 minutes.
Students create their final Dream Banner on paper including Values, Dreams–in art and words–and Hashtags. It is done on the third sheet of paper, following prompts students receive after completing the activities above.

When their Dream Banner is complete, students use a phone or tablet to photograph their Dream Banner and then make an audio recording of themselves speaking the words on it. Then, according to our arrangements with the teachers, students upload the photo and audio file or email it directly to their teacher.

After teachers approve the content, it is uploaded to the Dreamline Gallery by the teacher or authorized adult using the Dreamline Mobile app for iPhone or Android.

In some settings, teachers or other authorized adults will receive the digital files and create offline fabric Dream Banners and Dreamlines using an Abundance Materials Kit.

In a final session, students with access to Zoom meet in breakouts to share individual work. Students who are participating asynchronously complete an activity to examine and respond to their classmates’ Dream Banners posted on the Dreamline Gallery.

Groups that have had fabric banners created from digital files can display them in food stores or other public places to inspire and connect. Each Banner is QR coded to connect to the online version with any phone so our dreams for a better tomorrow spread far, fast, and safely.

If you want to participate with students, you need to sign up for an information and training Zoom call. Max 25 participants per call.
