PROGRAM PROGRESS

Dream Power in Texas!

Dreamline teacher Michael Munetsi never does anything small. Her dreams are big and her actions are big! This year, she not only engaged all 300 of her students in reflecting on what matters most and creating Dream Banners, she got the whole community to do it! And at just the right time.

She shared, “We recently found out that our school is closing in May, so this project just felt right to do before they move to other schools. They’ve been connecting to themselves and each other in a way that’s beautiful.” and “I love that it would give the kids a chance to still feel connected with the place we called home even when it no longer exists.”

Her district’s Big Art Day is in April, and this year she and another powerhouse Dreamline teacher (who is also her mom) created the BIGGEST art project of Big Art Day. They even set up a booth for all attendees to create their own Dream Banners. And they didn’t just use markers and cloth. They printed them with lino printing! Everyone loved it.

You can check out this video interview with Michael that we made a few years back when she was at a school in Dallas.

Last year at this time 20 4th grade students were piloting our Dream Path SEL full curriculum program at 1 school. Right now we’re thrilled to report that 270 students in eleven classrooms across grades 3-6 are deeply engaged in the reflections and lessons of this in-depth program.  We are working at the MoffetAdaire, and Jenks elementary schools with great support from principals and staff. Dreamline staff are in regular contact with teachers in these grant-funded supported programs thanks to the Penn Treaty Special Services District and an anonymous fund.

In recent school visits teachers reported that students were discussing problems ranging from homelessness to religious freedom to gun violence and litter. The work of these schools will be featured at the June 9th event, and we will be thrilled to share the results of these programs in the months to come.

The Langston Hughes poem “Dream Keeper” was a motivating force for creating Dreamline. Hope Rising includes use of this poem and you can find other resources for use with Hughes Poetry and Dreamline HERE.

Using Dreamline’s Hope Rising activity sequence participants can complete the process for creating Dream Banners in 3-5 periods or 90 minutes of class time.
