FEATURE STORY
A WORLD WITHOUT WAR
I have a dream
I know it’s a dream that can be
A world free of stop signs
A world full of non-stop dreams
Where the world’s not maker of missiles and bombs
Where a rocket will never hit my sleeping child –excerpt from English translation by team of 12-year-old girls in Iran
Last spring we received an email from an English language teacher at a girls school in Iran. She asked for our help with a translation project initiated by her students. They wanted to translate the words to the video above and to make an English language version of it. Could we help with the translation?
Translating lyrics of a song is not easy. It has to fit not only the meaning of the words but the rhythm and feeling of the song. With the help of Dreamline Board member Abigail Jones, and after many many WhatsApp messages and video calls (with a time difference of 11 hours from Abigail’s home in Los Angeles) and with a lot of revision, they crafted a beautiful rendering of this powerful popular song.
And they had no idea how timely it would become.
Summer came and went. School was off there and here. And this fall, we have started the process for creating the English video the students imagined. Right now, professional Middle Eastern musicians in Philadelphia are creating the instrument tracks. We are collaborating with some US female students to record the vocals, and the Iranian girl team is creating video content. Our goal is a release by January 15, the observation of Martin Luther King Day in the US.
What started as a project from inspired Dreamline students has grown into a collaborative effort to give voice to hopes and dreams that so many share.
